The Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center’s Crime in Alabama publication states in 2007 - 17,267 people were arrested for possessing illegal drugs, 1,663 were arrested for distributing illegal drugs, which leads to a total of 18,930 people in Alabama being arrested for being involved in illegal drugs in some-form-or-fashion. The Department of Labor states alcohol and drugs cost American businesses about $81 billion in lost productivity per year.
